Thinset is a specialized mortar that has been designed to be applied as a relatively thin layer. This is in contrast to “medium-bed” (up to ½” thick) and traditional “mud bed” installations (1” or more). So, all thinsets are mortars but not all mortars are thinsets.
Thinset is recommended for use in stone veneer or brick veneer installations on a concrete of masonry surface over expanded metal lath. Always check with a professional before starting your project to be sure you have the right mortar for the job.
